You can try running stiffer springs to keep your clutch from burning up, however, launching a bike with very stiff springs is a bit tricky. An MTC lockup provides you with the ability to run a much lower intial spring pressure and be aggressive with the clutch lever. When properly set up, the lower spring pressure will get the bike moving on the bottom end without too much drama, while the lockup keeps the clutch from slipping on the top end, resulting in more consistent short times.
